Dr. Louann Brizendine is an American scientist and neuropsychiatrist. She is a researcher, clinician and professor at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and founded the Women’s Mood and Hormone Clinic at UCSF. She is the author of three books: The Female Brain (2006), The Male Brain (2010) and THE UPGRADE: How the Female Brain Gets Stronger and Better in Midlife and Beyond which goes on sale in April 2022. As the Lynne and Marc Benioff endowed professor of clinical psychiatry at UCSF, Dr. Brizendine continues to speak, write, research, and consult.
Dr. Brizendine was among the first to explain why women think, communicate, and feel differently than men. Now, inspired by her own experiences and those of the thousands of women at her clinic, she has a message that is nothing short of revolutionary: in the time of life typically known as menopause, women’s brains are reshaped, for the better, in a way that creates new power, a bracing clarity, and a laser-like sense of purpose if you know how to seize it.
In THE UPGRADE: How the Female Brain Gets Stronger and Better in Midlife and Beyond, Dr. Brizendine delivers actionable, science-backed steps for preserving brain health in a stunning roadmap, told through intimate stories, to a new a brain state and its incredible possibilities. She never uses the words perimenopause or menopause with their suggestions of obsolescence, but instead explains the best evidence-based strategies for mindset and vision, brain health and maintaining long term cognitive function, sleep, exercise, and hormone management. With an engaging writing style and clear prescriptive advice, she offers specific ways women can fend off dementia, increase longevity and well-being, and find their best selves at this stage of life. The time is now to celebrate women stepping into their power and an entirely new—and radically positive—understanding of aging.
Dr. Louann Brizendine completed her degree in Neurobiology at UC Berkeley, graduated from Yale School of Medicine, and did her internship and residency at Harvard Medical School. She has served on both the faculties of Harvard University and University of California at San Francisco.
