Arthur Benjamin has combined his love of magic and of math to create a dynamic all-ages presentation called “Mathemagics,” in which he demonstrates and explains his secrets for performing rapid mental calculations faster than a calculator. He has given three TED talks which have been viewed over 50 million times. His mission… to bring math to the masses in a magical way.
Benjamin will be a key presenter at SVAF Student Day in 2024, where he’ll share the secret to doing math in your head faster than a calculator and present a compelling, fun and fast-paced magic show centered on pre-college math.
Benjamin has appeared on The Today Show, CNN, The Colbert Report, and National Public Radio and been featured in more than 100 newspaper and magazine profiles. In his Colbert Report interview, after joking around about which numbers are conservative and which are liberal, Steven Colbert surprised Benjamin with several math problems and had a calculator ready to verify his answers.
Benjamin earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics at Carnegie Mellon and a master’s degree and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University. Since 1989, he has been a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, where he is the Smallwood Family Professor of Mathematics.
Benjamin’s bestselling books include Secrets of Mental Math: The Mathemagician’s Guide to Lightning Calculation and Amazing Math Tricks and The Magic of Math: Solving for X.
“In a time when math abilities of U.S. students and adults alike continue to decline, Benjamin’s ‘mathemagics’ provides a welcome–if isolated–antidote to the national disease, mathephobia,” – Los Angeles TImes
“[Arthur] is amazing at captivating an audience. He’s done more for math than most people do in their entire careers.” – USF professor Paul Zeitz.
