Admiral James Stavridis

Retired four-star Navy admiral, CNN senior military analyst, respected military historian, and prescient bestselling author

Admiral James Stavridis draws on his own deep well of strategic experience to imagine the dangers and possibilities of tomorrow’s world in his fiction – offering a compelling vision of global geopolitics and security challenges in the late 21st century.

Stavridis is a distinguished retired four-star U.S. Navy officer, a renowned diplomacy expert, and bestselling author of 2034, 2054, and next year’s follow-up, 2084: A Novel of the Climate War, with co-writer Elliot Ackerman.

A brilliantly woven cautionary tale and chilling prophecy about the possible path to war for a planet devastated by climate change, 2084 emphasizes the power of imaginative thinking to write a different destiny for humanity in the face of environmental and political upheaval.

Admiral Stavridis graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1976, and over the course of the next three decades, made history as the first Naval officer to serve as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander of U.S. Southern Command. He led missions in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, the Balkans, and Africa. His career is marked by more than 50 medals, including 28 from foreign nations, and his commitment to international partnership, military innovation, and security.

Admiral James Stavridis’ legendary 37-year career includes serving as the first naval Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (2009–2013), overseeing military operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, the Balkans, and global counter-piracy initiatives. He also led U.S. Southern Command, directing American military activities throughout Latin America (2006–2009). Stavridis commanded the USS Barry, Destroyer Squadron 21, and the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, earning the Battenberg Cup and Navy League John Paul Jones Award for inspirational leadership.

Stavridis played key roles in strategic planning for the Navy, as senior military assistant to top Pentagon officials, and led the Navy’s operational innovation group, Deep Blue, following 9/11. After retiring, Stavridis served as Dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University and remains a prominent author, speaker, and expert in global affairs, exemplifying exceptional leadership and visionary thinking in both military and civilian spheres.
