Over her nearly four decades in sports reporting, acclaimed Miami Herald journalist Michelle Kaufman has covered 14 Olympic Games, six World Cups, numerous Wimbledons, French Opens, and US Opens, as well as Super Bowls, NBA Finals, World Series, and Final Fours.
Widely recognized as a dynamic and important voice in sports journalism, Kaufman is renowned for her coverage of some of the world’s biggest sporting events and her commitment to nurturing the next generation of journalists.
Beyond reporting, Kaufman teaches sports reporting at her alma mater, the University of Miami, where she has mentored emerging journalists for over 20 years. Her lively and popular classroom is seen as a launchpad for many successful careers in sports media.
Kaufman is respected for her integrity, real-world knowledge, and her advocacy for women in sports media. She lives in Miami and is married to columnist and author Dave Barry.
Born in 1965 in Frederick, Maryland, Kaufman earned her degree in journalism and English from the University of Miami in 1987, actively contributing to the student newspaper during her studies.
Kaufman’s professional career began at the St. Petersburg Times, then the Detroit Free Press, before joining the Miami Herald in 1996, where she continues to write.
