Irish literary giant and National Book Award winner

Known for his expansive, empathetic storytelling and international reach, Irish author Colum McCann is responsible for some of the landmark titles in contemporary fiction. He is internationally recognized for his novels and short story collections that span both geography and theme, often focusing on marginalized voices and moments of profound historic resonance.

Critics have praised McCann’s new novel Twist for its lyrical and immersive prose and vivid, cinematic descriptions of the underwater world and the physicality of free diving. The book uses undersea cables as a metaphor for both the technological and emotional connections that span continents

McCann’s blockbuster bestseller Let the Great World Spin about the daring tightrope walk of Philippe Petit between the Twin Towers, won the National Book Award. His 13 books have been published in over 40 languages and have won prestigious honors such as the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from France, the National Jewish Book Award, and an Oscar. His novel, Apeirogo, rooted in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was Booker Prize-longlisted.

McCann’s work explores the human spirit, cultural crossings, and histories both personal and political.​

McCann studied journalism at the Dublin Institute of Technology and received his B.S. from U.T. Austin. Early in his career, he worked as a journalist for Irish newspapers, including The Irish Press, where he was named Young Journalist of the Year. He has taught creative writing at Hunter College in New York.

McCann cofounded Narrative 4—an international nonprofit that fosters empathy through story exchange—underscoring his belief in the power of storytelling to bridge divides and cultivate global understanding.

While born and raised in Dublin, McCann currently lives in New York.
