Farmworker’s daughter, teen mom, award-winning author, and international keynote speaker
The graduation photo that went viral in 2019 wasn’t taken on a campus. It was taken in a strawberry field. In it, Erica Alfaro stands in her cap and gown beside her farmworker parents. The picture made headlines worldwide, and it tells only the end of a much harder story.
Born in Fresno, California, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Erica was 13 when her family returned to the United States. She struggled academically, became a teen mom, dropped out of high school, and lived through many years of domestic abuse.
Then she defied the odds. She earned her diploma from New Millennium Charter High School, an associate degree in psychology from MiraCosta College, a bachelor’s in psychology from Cal State San Marcos, and a master’s in education and counseling from San Diego State University. She became the first woman in her family to obtain a graduate degree. Education was her ticket out of poverty.
Today, Erica is an international keynote speaker, award-winning author of Harvesting Dreams, and Chair of the Board of Directors for SIATech, a network of public charter high schools. Hers is a story of decision, sacrifice, and parents who believed in a better future. Her message is simple: where you start does not determine where you finish.
