Historian and author of The Daughters of Yalta, whose new book, Shadow Before the Flame, tells the story of the Hindenburg disaster and the prelude to war
Catherine Grace Katz is a historian whose acclaimed debut, The Daughters of Yalta, uncovers the remarkable roles played by the daughters of three powerful men (Churchill, Roosevelt, and Harriman) at the Yalta Conference in 1945.
Her new book, Shadow Before the Flame: The Hindenburg Disaster and the Prelude to War, takes readers aboard the doomed luxury airship that burst into flames over New Jersey in 1937. Through the stories of its passengers and crew, Katz shows how the Hindenburg, once a symbol of hope and progress, became a propaganda tool for the Nazi regime, and how its destruction foreshadowed the war to come. She combines meticulous research with thriller-like suspense, bringing one of history’s most dramatic disasters vividly to life.
She received degrees in history from Harvard and from Christ’s College, University of Cambridge, and a JD from Harvard Law School. Alongside her work as a historian, Katz is an associate at an international law firm in Washington, D.C.
